Muskoka Parry Sound Early Spring Water Conditions Update April 27, 2015
Water Safety
The
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Parry Sound District is advising
area residents that a Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety is in
effect for the District which includes the District Municipality of Muskoka,
the Territorial District of Parry Sound and a north-west portion in the County
of Haliburton.
High water levels and flow conditions, typical of this time of year, exist throughout the area and residents are reminded to keep a close watch on conditions, regularly check for updated messages and exercise caution near fast-moving rivers and streams. Residents and those visiting the area are advised to be aware of current watershed conditions, exercise caution while around water bodies and maintain close supervision of children and pets.
MNRF is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Description of Weather System
At this time the area is forecasted to receive less than 5mm of rain over the next five days with daytime highs up to 17 degrees Celsius.
Description of Current Conditions
The snowpack across the district has now melted with the exception of heavily shaded areas at higher elevations in area watersheds. Water levels in lakes have risen to typical spring levels over the past week and should begin to slowly decline. River flows will continue to remain high and fast over the next couple of weeks.
During this time of year we can expect higher and faster flowing water in most watercourses.
Slippery and unstable banks and extremely cold water temperatures can lead to very hazardous conditions around any water body.
WATERSHED CONDITIONS STATEMENT – WATER SAFETY: indicates that high flows, melting ice or other factors could be dangerous for such users as boaters, anglers and swimmers but flooding is not expected.
